1 The Infantry and Cavalry School (an early name of CGSC) was closed for four years during the Spanish-American War and the Philippine Insurrection. See Elvid Hunt, History of Fort Leavenworth, 1827-1937, 2d ed. (Fort Leavenworth, KS: Command and General Staff School Press, 1937), 150, 215.

2 The Army Service Schools were closed again during World War I. War Department orders mandated graduation of all classes on 16 May 1916 and officers were ordered to report to their regiments. During the war, Fort Leavenworth was an active training center for units of regular soldiers and new officers. The General Service Schools were reestablished in 1919. ibid., 216; and U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, A Military History of the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, 1881-1963 (Fort Leavenworth, KS: The College, 1964), 20, 22.

3 Most of this list came from published sources. For Major Generals Hay through Richardson, names and dates were compiled from organizational charts and the exact dates of the beginning and end of command could not be determined.

***Names and dates on this list came from various published sources including Commandants, Staff, Faculty, and Graduates of the Command and General Staff School, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, 1881-1939 (Fort Leavenworth, KS: The Command and General Staff School Press, 1939). Additional name information such as given names came from various editions of the Army Register and United States Military Academy, Association of Graduates, Register of Graduates and Former Cadets of the United States Military Academy, 1802-1990, Dwight D. Eisenhower centennial ed. (West Point, NY: The Association, 1990) among other sources.
